Key Points

  • McIngvale’s latest hedge gives prediction markets a high-profile example of a business using sports event contracts to offset a real commercial liability.
  • McIngvale said Kalshi connected him with market makers who offered roughly 24-1 on Houston, compared with approximately 18-1 at traditional sportsbooks.
  • The $516,000 position could pay about $13 million if Houston wins the World Series.
  • Gallery Furniture’s current Astros promotion has created roughly $4 million in refund exposure, according to McIngvale, with that figure potentially reaching around $12 million if Houston advances.

Mattress Mack Moves His Astros World Series Hedge to Kalshi

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale has taken one of sports betting’s most recognizable business hedges onto Kalshi.

According to an interview with the New York Post, the Houston furniture retailer placed $516,000 on the Astros to win the 2026 World Series. The Kalshi position carries a potential payout of approximately $13 million.

The platform choice is as interesting as the size. McIngvale said sportsbooks were offering roughly 18-1 after Houston clinched its playoff spot, while Kalshi connected him directly with market makers willing to provide the price he wanted.

“I talked to Kalshi, and they connected me with these market maker guys, and they got me the price of 24/1,” McIngvale told the Post.

For someone trying to move more than half a million dollars into a long-shot baseball future, six points of price difference is hardly cosmetic.

The $516K position is backing a much larger Gallery Furniture promotion

McIngvale’s sports wagers have long doubled as risk management for Gallery Furniture promotions, and the economics are straightforward.

The company’s current “Astros Win It All, Get It All” promotion promises customers a refund on qualifying Tempur-Pedic mattress purchases of $4,000 or more if Houston wins the championship.

McIngvale has said that Gallery Furniture has already accumulated about $4 million in liability through the promotion. He expects that exposure could reach approximately $12 million if the Astros make a deeper postseason run and sales accelerate with them.

That gives the Kalshi position a commercial purpose beyond simply taking a massive swing on Houston. An Astros championship would trigger the furniture refunds while simultaneously producing the payout on McIngvale’s contracts.

This is almost exactly how Kalshi says event contracts should be used

McIngvale was doing this kind of hedging years before sports markets became a major part of Kalshi. His choice of platform now gives the company an unusually clean example of the use case it has been pitching from the beginning.

Kalshi says its broader vision includes giving users the ability to hedge risks tied directly to real-world events. Its institutional business goes even further, promoting event contracts as a way for companies to hedge operational risks directly against the event creating the exposure.

Gallery Furniture fits that structure almost perfectly. The company has a known financial exposure attached to a binary event: either the Astros win the championship and qualifying customers receive refunds, or they do not.

McIngvale can take the opposite financial exposure in the market. The championship outcome that creates the refund liability also creates the Kalshi payout.

It also gives Kalshi something more valuable than another screenshot of a huge sports position. This is a recognizable business owner using a sports event contract for the kind of commercial hedging application prediction market operators have spent years arguing their products can support.

Texas makes the platform choice even more significant

McIngvale is making the trade from Texas, where there is still no state-regulated online sportsbook market.

Texas law generally prohibits betting on the outcome of games and contests, with specific statutory exceptions.

Kalshi operates through a different regulatory framework. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission lists Kalshi as a designated contract market, allowing it to offer event contracts under federal commodities law rather than a Texas sports wagering license.

That gives McIngvale access to a sports-linked market without the familiar routine of traveling to a legal sportsbook state to place the hedge.

For Kalshi, a nationally recognizable bettor publicly choosing its exchange for a six-figure Astros position is useful marketing. For the broader industry, the more interesting part is why he chose it: access, price and the ability to source liquidity from market makers.

Why This Matters For Bettors

Anyone who has followed Mattress Mack’s wagers throughout the years knows the giant ticket has never been the whole story.

He has spent years using sports markets to protect Gallery Furniture promotions long enough that the giant bet itself is almost routine. The interesting part is what's different this time.

For years, Mack has shopped sportsbooks for two things: a number worth betting and a book willing to take serious money. This time, Kalshi reportedly gave him both.

The jump from roughly 18-1 to 24-1 on a $516,000 position works out to about $3.1 million in additional potential winnings. That is the kind of price difference no serious bettor ignores.

It also shows prediction markets starting to compete on territory sportsbooks have traditionally owned. Unlike most Kalshi users, however, Mack is using the platform for a real business liability using the same Astros hedge he has used for years, only the best deal happened to come from Kalshi.

That is probably the most convincing version of the prediction market sales pitch. Forget the terminology around event contracts for a minute. Mack had risk he wanted to offset, went looking for a market with enough liquidity and found a better price there.

Most bettors will never need someone to source half a million dollars of liquidity, so Mack’s execution is not representative of the average Kalshi order. But the principle absolutely is: shop the number, shop the market and do not assume the sportsbook is automatically where the best deal lives.

Mack has spent years taking these hedges wherever the economics made sense. Kalshi winning his business this time is a pretty good sign that prediction markets are becoming a legitimate part of that search.

What Happens Next

Gallery Furniture’s exposure is the immediate variable to watch. McIngvale says the promotion currently carries about $4 million in liability and could reach roughly $12 million if Houston keeps advancing, leaving open the possibility that a growing promotional book could require additional hedging.

Kalshi also has every incentive to showcase the trade as evidence that its sports markets can serve business users alongside ordinary traders. Landing one of America’s most famous sports hedgers is considerably more useful to that pitch than another anonymous six-figure position.

For McIngvale, the outcome remains familiar. If Houston falls short, the Kalshi position loses while Gallery Furniture avoids the championship refunds. If the Astros win, the market payout helps offset the cost of making good on the promotion.
