It was close, but ultimately a bill to legalize sports betting was defeated in the House in March 2020. The vote means that we will need to wait until 2021's legislative session for the bill to be considered again.

However Rep. Tom Walter, who introduced the bill was encouraged by how close the vote was. The consensus was that rather then the state being against sports betting from an ethical perspective, the issue was that people were not quite prepared for the discussion.

It appears that the bill will be up for consideration next year, and with a year's worth of lobbying form sportsbooks, we believe that the bill should be passed in early 2021.

A rushed attempt to push through a bill during the 2020 legislative session ultimately failed, but it was very close. The vote was only defeated in the House 27-32. The H225, introduced by Rep. Tom Walter was always going to be difficult to push through since the Equality State had barely touched the subject of sports betting since the federal ban was removed in 2018.

Recently Wyoming's neighboring states have either legalized online sports betting or are in the process of doing so. This means that Wyoming could lose potential sports betting tax revenue from its own residents to its neighbors.

A good example of this predicament is the city of Cheyenne, located along Wyoming's southern border with Colorado. Cheyenne is not only the capital of Wyoming but also contains the largest population.

For residents of Cheyenne the state of Colorado is only a short drive away.

In Colorado, online sports betting is fully legal, which means you can just cross the border, take out your smartphone and place a wager, even if you are a resident of Wyoming. In fact Fort Collins a town with an excellent selection of sports bars is less than an hours drive.

The bill will be up for a vote again next year; DraftKings and FanDuel will likely be there to lobby for a yes vote. With external pressure from bordering states and the subject becoming debated we predict the bill will be passed during the 2021 legislative session.
