Online Sports Betting Illinois

The state of Illinois has now become the eleventh state in the US to offer online sports betting after the Senate and House decided to do away with in-person registration.

The original plan was to insist that customers sign-up to sportsbooks in-person before they could sign-up online. This restrictive policy has hampered states such as Nevada from reaping the full benefits of online sports betting.

There are currently five sportsbooks offering online wagering and it looks like Illinois is fast establishing itself as one of the leading states when it comes to online betting.

Online sports Betting in Illinois

Illinois coming online was a huge event in the sports betting world, since it opened up the city of Chicago to the wonders of mobile wagering.

Chicago is a sporting powerhouse with sports teams in every major professional league, including two MLB teams. This means that Illinois will be hotly contested market.

In June 2020, after an amendment to the sports betting bill, which did away with in-person registration, BetRivers launched in the state.

FanDuel, DraftKings, Pointsbet and William Hill then followed suit, only to be told that in-person registration was back. After a couple of months, the in-person requirement was reversed again, and its been clear sailing every since.

Sports betting licensing Illinois

Sportsbooks will have to partner with existing casinos in order to get an online sport betting license in the state.

There are currently ten casinos in the state, but only three existing casinos have applied for a license for sports betting. This means that we can expect three sportsbooks to apply in 2020. That is assuming that a casino is only allowed to partner with one casino.

The issue of in-person registration which has proven to be a big turn-off for punters in other states was removed from the sports betting bill.
