Online sports betting in New York State

When the New Jersey sports betting market became the largest in the US following the 2018 US Senate's decision to remove the federal ban on sports betting, everyone expected that New York State, eager not to lose revenue to its neighbours would soon follow suit. However, the attempts to push through legislation failed, in part, due to a proposed integrity fee for sports leagues.

Fast forward to April 2021 and legislators finally managed to push through a bill that would allow mobile wagering. The news that the nation's largest city will soon be online has shaken the US sports betting market and hopes remain that the first online wagering will be ready for the Super Bowl.

Sportsbooks in NY

As of April 2021, placing a wager on sports in NY is legal, both in-person and online.

The former has been allowed since 2013, but online wagering was only legalized in 2021 after two years of legal wrangling of issues such as integrity fees for the sports leagues.

Now that online sports betting has been legalized and potentially the largest market is going live, you can expect 2021 and 2022 to be a very exciting time for the betting industry.

Since 2018, when NJ voted to allow online sports betting, the state of New York has lost millions of dollars of tax and licensing revenue to its neighbour. In addition, it is estimated that one in every five wagers placed in New Jersey is made by a New York resident.

In August 2021, it was announced that several sportsbooks had bid for licenses in New York. They include:

  1. FanDuel The largest online sportsbook in the country, will look to be the first live betting site in NY.
  2. DraftKings → Where FanDuel goes, DraftKings follows and vice versa. The big two are expected to be the largest online sportsbooks in NY.
  3. BetMGM → The third-largest sportsbook in the US, will look to join FanDuel and DraftKings as one of the first sites to go live in NY.
  4. PointsBet → The sportsbook's unique points betting offering has proved incredibly popular in the US. PointsBet is now live in six states.
  5. Caesars Sportsbook The company went from a smaller online sports betting provider to one of the most exciting sportsbooks on the market after its William Hill acquisition.
  6. Bet365 Sportsbook → The UK sports betting giant is determined to impact a number of key states, including New Jersey and Colorado.
  7. Barstool Sportsbook It may be late to the party, but the popular brand is already making significant inroads around the country.
  8. FOX Bet → The online sportsbook focuses on the East coast market with Pennsylvania and New Jersey products.

Best Sportsbook in New York

Several big names are lining up to launch in the state of New York.

Of course, you'll find the usual suspects, FanDuel and DraftKings, among the initial list of applications. These two sportsbooks currently dominate the US market. If a state has legalized online sports betting, they are guaranteed to be there. In New Hampshire, DraftKings managed to carve out a deal that gives it a monopoly and thus excludes its main competitor.

The 'big two' have enjoyed success for several reasons, not least because they boasted a huge existing customer base thanks to their daily fantasy sports product. However, they also offer excellent products with competitive odds and a great range of bets to choose from.

If you are signed up to either DraftKings or FanDuel's DFS products, signing up for their sportsbook is particularly easy.

FanDuel and DraftKings are great safe options - you know exactly what you're going to get. However, several other exciting sportsbooks are breaking onto the scene that may offer better value depending on what you're looking for.

PointsBet NY

Our Pick: Best Sportsbook in NY

2x risk free bets worth $2,000

High-Value Odds

Ultimately, sports betting is about making money and in order to do that, you need odds that offer you significant value. Since all the sportsbooks in the market are still relatively new, most of the odds offered by sportsbooks are similar; however, over time, you can see that some sportsbooks offer consistently better value. PointsBet, in our experience, offers the best value odds over time, especially for major sporting events.

A World-Class Product

PointsBet has enjoyed rip-roaring success since it made the move from Australia to the US. The online sportsbook dominates the Aussie market thanks to its state of the art product, which not only looks good but is also easy to use.

Unique Betting

The online sportsbook has flourished in a crowded market because it is unique. The company offers points betting, which puts your wager on a sliding scale where you win more the more right your bet is. This type of betting works really well with high-scoring games where there is usually a clear favourite like Basketball.

Excellent Welcome Bonus

The PoinstBet welcome bonus is extremely generous and divided into two parts, which are unusual for a risk-free bet promotion. First, the offer allows you to place your first two wagers (one fixed-odds bet and one points bet) safe in the knowledge that you'll get your wagers back in the form of free bets if you lose.

What is PointsBetting?
Nils Edmondson

Nils Edmondson

Points Betting will soon arrive in New York, and yeah, you should be excited!

The unique format has taken several other states by storm, including NY's neighbour New Jersey.

Points Betting differs from fixed-odds betting as it allows you to place a wager on a points scale that rewards or punishes according to how right or wrong your bet is.

Sounds complicated? Let's break it down into an example:

  • The New York Giants are playing the New York Jets.
  • You think it will be a low scoring game, so you place a $10 wager on under 40 points scored.
  • The game ends with 30 points on the board.
  • This means that you have a 10 point win, so your original stake is multiplied by 10.
  • You win 10x$10 = $100

PointsBet is our clear favourite out of the current sportsbooks that are set to launch this year. However, there are a number of other big names that are worth checking out.

Bet365 look set to launch its product in New York. They have enjoyed some real success in New Jersey, where they have used their global experience to build a solid brand around good odds and an excellent selection of sports. The British bookmaker is arguably the biggest in the world.

Barstool Sportsbook, the popular if not controversial company, launched its first sports betting product only in late 2020. However, it is now up and running in a few states and is fast gaining ground on a number of established sportsbooks. They are heavy on promotions, so if you are after a nice bonus or boosted odds, then we can recommend Barstool.

BetMGM, the country's third-largest sportsbook, offers a great product. If you're a fan of their casino, then you will love their mobile product.

Sportsbook Deposits & Withdrawals in NY

Unfortunately, getting your money in and then out of a legal online sportsbook is much more difficult than it should be.

The banks still operate with certain restrictions implemented pre-2018, when online sports betting was illegal in the US.

This means that Visa & Mastercard, for example, may be blocked by your bank even if the sportsbook you are attempting to deposit to is legal and licensed in your state. If you get your money into your sportsbook using Visa, Mastercard, or a bank transfer, it is almost impossible to withdraw funds using the same method.

This is why two online payment platforms have stepped in to play the middleman between sportsbook and bank, making life much easier for everyone.

PayPal

The most trusted payment platform in the US for sportsbook deposits and withdrawals is undoubtedly PayPal.

With PayPal, you can legally and easily circumvent the pesky restrictions placed on you by your bank. For example, your bank only sees that it is depositing money into your PayPal account and so can rest easy. Likewise, your sportsbook only sees a deposit from your PayPal account and therefore does not need to store any sensitive banking information.

This adds another layer of security to your transfers. Add to this the state of the art encryption software deployed by PayPal on all its transfers, and you have a very, very safe deposit and withdrawal method at your disposal.

All you need to do is simply deposit your funds into your PayPal account. Then you select PayPal as your deposit method with your sportsbook, and you make your first transfer.

Every major online sportsbook that is due to launch in the state accepts PayPal as a payment method.

You will need to pay a 2.9% deposit fee with PayPal, plus a $0.30 flat fee.

New York state permits PayPal as a legal payment platform for sportsbook deposits and withdrawals.

Skrill

The online payment platform, Skrill, has grown in popularity over the past year thanks to its partnership with several high profile online sportsbooks.

The payment platform works almost exactly like PayPal in that it plays the middleman between your bank account and your sportsbook.

You'll find the same level of encryptions and security with Skrill as you will with PayPal, and even the functionality of its site and mobile app is similar.

The main difference is that Skrill charges a $5.50 fee on withdrawals, unlike PayPal, which charges a fee on deposits.

Skrill is currently only offered by four online sportsbooks as a payment option. Three of these sportsbooks will soon be live in New York.

  • Bet365
  • BetMGM
  • FoxBet

How to bet in New Jersey online as a New Yorker

There has been a huge increase in single, predominantly male New Yorkers heading to New Jersey since the PASPA ruling in 2018. These young men have one thing on their mind - sports betting. They now even have their own term 'carpetbagging gamblers'.

The unusual legal situation at the state level allows New Yorkers to sign-up online to an NJ sportsbook in New York and even register their account to their NY address. This is all 100% legal. The only issue is that they are not allowed to bet online in New York state. The sportsbook app will read their geolocation and block them from betting. So, New Yorkers sign-up in NY and bet in NJ.

In 2019 FanDuel NJ revealed that 25% of its users are registered in NY. These bets were placed all over the state, at bus stops, train stations and sports bars.

Best ways to get from NYC to NJ

NJ Transit Trains: These take between 20-30 minutes assuming you get off at Hoboken or Newport. This is one of the most expensive options with tickets costing between $6-12.

PATH subway: 20 minutes. A ticket costs around $2.75

Ferry: A scenic but expensive route. The average fare is $9. You can take the ferry from Pier 79 on West 39th Street.

The sportsbooks have caught on to this practice and are flooding the NJ transit trains with advertising. Usually, these ads will display their welcome bonus, which is something that you should take advantage of.

The US is still a relatively untapped market, so sportsbooks are throwing everything at gaining new customers during this initial phase. This means that their welcome offers are incredibly generous. However, for Sportsbooks, this is not sustainable from a business perspective, so we recommend you get involved now before it is too late.

Remember it is still possible to sign-up in NY, collect your welcome bonus and then bet once you are in NJ.

The best sports bars in Hoboken and Newport
