Maine Sports Betting

Everything was in place for online sports betting to arrive in Maine for the beginning of 2020. That was until the existing casinos, unhappy with the potential competition, began a campaign to veto the proposed bill.

After the bill was vetoed, lawmakers rushed to override it, but their attempts fell at the last hurdle as the Senate voted against the override, by one vote.

It looks like the sports betting will be back on the cards for the next legislative session with an eventual launch in 2021.

Online Sports Betting in Maine

The Pine Tree State came within one senate vote of passing a sports betting bill in early 2020. The bill would have allowed for online sportsbook to launch in the state without partnering with an existing casino.

This clause obviously jarred with the local casinos who lobbied vociferously to have the bill vetoed. The veto eventually went through despite a late attempt to have it overrun.

The bill had enjoyed a significant amount of support, so we can expect to see it back on the tables in 2021.

The bill had proposed a 10% on all mobile wagers, which may be a deciding factor in pushing through the bill. Any sportsbook looking to launch in the state will also have to fork out $20,000 for a license.

When sports betting does eventually get legalized, there will be a number of sportsbooks looking to launch in the state, especially considering the low tax rate. We expect DraftKings will be one of the first to make it across state lines as they are already up and running in New Hampshire.
