The Old Line State is almost over the line when it comes to legal online sports betting. However it will all come down to the voters.

After a bill, which would permit online sports betting and retail sports betting facilities, was passed by the Senate in the 2020 legislative session it was decided that the final decision would go to the voters in November 2020.

The state is already surrounded by states that have either fully legalized sports betting or are about to.

A short trip to New Jersey, will provide you with a huge number of NJ sportsbooks. The same could be said for Pennsylvania which has the second highest number of sportsbooks in the country.

If you are based in the East of the state, in cities like Oakland, then you can pop over to West Virginia and find a good number of reputable WV sportsbooks.

Virginia is expected to go online with sports betting soon, and Delaware already offers sports betting at a number of retail sportsbooks.

With all this considered, it was already likely that Maryland was going to buckle under the pressure and follow suit.

Another factor which may have pushed the Senate to approve the bill was that the Washington Redskins are looking to build a new stadium and the location will very much depend on the legal situation of sports betting in Maryland.

The NFL team are flirting with Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia when it comes to where they will build this new stadium. In short - whichever state allows them to put together a lucrative sportsbook sponsorship deal then they stand the best chance of hosting the team.

Currently the bill proposed by the Maryland senate would allow for in-house sports betting facilities at the Washington Redskins stadium.
