Georgia is expecting to take action soon when it comes to legalize Online Sports betting & Online Casino

Georgia online sports betting

Georgia came close to pushing through a law in 2020 that would have legalized sports betting. However the proposal was introduced too late into the legislative session, with ended without either the House or the Senate approving the bill.

The bill would have opened up one the US' largest markets to sports betting and brought in a significant amount of revenue. The bill was also supported by the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United.

In the end, it looks like politics got in the way, and the proposal was too late in the session for any real agreement to take place.

Online Sports Betting in Georgia

It all looked so promising. In June 2020 a Senate Special Judiciary Committee suprised everyone by approving legislation which would allow Georgia's state lottery to offer online sports betting.

The Senate, who had previously been opposed to legalizing any forms of gambling appeared to have been won over by the promise to partially find the state's HOPE scholarship program. The tactic of spending sports betting tax on worthy causes has worked elsewhere, such as Colorado, where sports betting revenue was offered to fund a Water program.

It was Senator Burt Jones who promoted the legislation, saying that regulating and legalizing industry would allow the state to benefit legally from an industry that was already operating in the informal market and worth $1.5 billion in $50 to $60 million in revenue.

In the end, it came as too much, too soon. The sports bill effectively allowed for all forms of sports betting, including mobile and retail as well as casinos and racetracks. Legislators only had a few days to decided and in the end no decision was made and the legislative session ended. We will now have to wait until 2021 for the subject to be raised again. However, considering the amount of support it garnered outside of the political sphere including from the four of Georgia's sports franchises, we expect that it should pass next year.
