David Portnoy started Barstool Sports in 2003 in Milton, Massachusetts.

The company's initial sports blog rapidly grew in popularity and the enterprise expanded into the Barstool Media Company producing podcasts and sports sites.

Over the past eight years, driven by David Portnoy's charismatic and controversial leadership style, the brand has garnered a loyal following of mainly young male sports fans, often referred to as 'stoolies'.

On January 29 2020, the company Penn National Gaming, a Pennsylvania based casino and racetrack operator announced that it would buy a 36% stake in Barstool sports for $163.

In 2020, Barstool Sports announced that it would be launching its first online sportsbook in Pennsylvania.

Barstool Sportsbook: everything you need to know

Barstool Sports began its life as a sports blog led by its charismatic and controversial founder David Portnoy, or 'El Presidente' as he is known to many Stoolies.

The site proved incredibly popular among young male sports fans has since grown into a mini-media empire that boasts numerous podcasts, radio shows and streaming services.

The move into sports betting has been a relatively natural transition, considering the nature of the company's business and its loyal sports-mad followers.

Initial results indicate that the sportsbook could cement its place as one of the country's largest sportsbooks in the coming years. In under a year, the sportsbook has officially launched in four states.

Barstool Sportsbook: the good 👍

  • Trustworthy Controversy aside, this is still a large established company that is licensed and regulated by numerous gaming commissions.
  • Secure payments The sportsbook boasts a wide range of payment options for both withdrawals and deposits.
  • A wide selection of bets The sportsbook may not have the widest selection of sports to chose from but it does have a lot of betting formats to pick from including moneylines, parlays and futures.
  • Excellent promotions This is really Barstool Sportsbooks forte. Not only do they have one of the best welcome offers on the market but they also offer an incredible number of daily, weekly and seasonal promotions.

Barstool Sportsbook: the bad 👎

  • No integration with other products Barstool Sports has a wealth of sports data and information that you can use to inform your betting decisions. Unfortunately, you wouldn't know it just by using the sportsbook app. We think this is a missed opportunity.
  • No e-sports bets offered It's a growing market and we would have accepted such a new sportsbook to have included in their offering.
  • You cannot call customer service They have a live chat, email and mail address, but being able to pick up the phone and speak to a real person is always a plus.

Barstool: Safety Rating 5/5

Barstool Sportsbook is a fully licensed entity in a number of US states.

They are registered with the following gaming commissions:

  • Indiana Gaming Commission

  • Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

  • Illinois Gaming Commission
  • Michigan Gaming Control Board

Barstool Sportsbook also offers a wide range of legal payment methods for both deposits and withdrawals.

Barstool Sportsbook final verdict

Barstool Sportsbook is a good but not a great online sportsbook.

There are no glaring issues with the product, and there will no doubt be improvements made to the minor issues we have highlighted, considering it is such a new sportsbook. However, we don't feel that, currently, Barstool Sportsbook has that x-factor.

We were not disappointed with Barstool, but we were left a little underwhelmed.

The team at BettingScanner has identified that we had higher expectations for this product, considering the brand's wealth of experience in the sports industry. Unlike DraftKings and FanDuel that seamlessly integrated their daily fantasy sports product with their sportsbook product, Barstool have instead produced a standalone product that only hints at the connection to Barstool Sports via its marketing. There is little of the in-depth analysis and educational aspect to sports betting that you can find on some of their sites.

Barstool Sportsbook has undergone some big changes recently, so check out this updated Barstool Sportsbook Review to see the new welcome bonus and features.

Barstool Sportsbook App

Barstool Sportsbook launched in 2020 which means that its product is modern and up-to-date.

You can easily download the app for iOS from the Apple Store.

If you have an Android then you will need to visit the sportsbook's site and click on the link as Google Play does not allow direct downloads of sportsbook apps. You may need to give your phone permission to download apps from unknown sources.

Easy-to-use The functionality is good on the Barstool Sportsbook app. Again, the app may not blow you out of the water, but it does the job well.

Looks goodThis is not the most important thing on our list, however, if you are going to use an app over and over again then it does make a difference to your customer experience if it looks good. Barstool Sportsbook's app looks and feels very much like a Barstool Sports product in terms of its appearance with all the familiar branding.

Reliable There is nothing worse than a buggy app, especially when you are looking to place an in-play wager. However, Barstool Sportsbook's app seems to be free of glitches and bugs so far.

    Barstool Sportsbook Withdrawals

Unfortunately, when it comes to withdrawing your funds there are considerably fewer options available to you. This is not the fault of Barstool Sportsbook, but the result of an antiquated banking system lagging behind state legislation.

    • Play+ 2-3 working days.
    • PayPal 4-5 Days.

    Barstool Sportsbook Customer Service

Barstool's customer service has only been up and running since late last year but initial reports suggest that they are a reliable and relatively friendly service.

The most effective method is their live chat. You will usually get a response within a minute and most major issues can be solved using this method. However, if you require some more general help you will often be presented with a copy-paste of their FAQs - with information related to your topic but not necessarily a response to your specific question - which can feel a little impersonal.

You can request a call from customer services but there is no phone number you can dial. You can also choose to email Barstool Sportsbook.
